ESP is the ability to receive or send information not using the five senses of sight, sound, taste, touch and smell." Hence, the term, "sixth sense." And it generally consists of five categories:

   * telepathy - mind-to-mind communication
       * clairvoyance - seeing events or objects through an inner sight
       * precognition - the ability to view events before they occur
       * psychometry - the ability to learn the history of an object by touching it. Feeler Clairsentience - This type of person picks up thoughts, feelings and experiences that manifest as a feeling. What they are feeling is energy translated into a feeling. Their sense of touch is well-developed and they have the ability to know people by feeling what they feel. After enlightenment, this is someone would have the ability to practice psychometry. The ability to put something belonging to someone in their hand and read the energy. Depending on their other gifts, they could tell the past, present or future from the energy. They have the ability to feel how others feel and not just on the emotional level.
    * Remote Viewing - The ability to see events in real time at a distance.

These capabilities are generally thought to be the sole province of psychics: people - like famed clairvoyant Sylvia Browne - supposedly born with these abilities, or who have acquired the gift through some paranormal or traumatic event. Yet renowned psychics like Edgar Cayce believed that everyone is psychic to some degree because, as he said, it was a "natural ability of the soul." In fact both Browne & Cayce are correct some of us are born with psychic skills AND they can be developed given time & training.

Over the many centuries extrasensory perception or psychokinesis (PK), the paranormal influence of the mind on physical events and processes, has been well noted in cultures gone by as well modern day where these people had extraordinary powers or a sixth sense and because they voiced this ESP they were burned or drowned as well as being termed witches. It is still practiced in many indigenous tribal cultures today whereby communication with spirits as well as those that have passed on is very much alive and probably more accepted as the norm.

Much later did scientists, starting with J.B, Rhine at Duke University in the 1930s-60s, as well as many other professionals, begin to devise solid techniques such as designing cards that have significant symbols like squares, circles, stars, waves, crosses and circle patterns on then and made up a pack of twenty five cards called Zener Cards?

The professionals selected cards that were very well shuffled and only they knew what the symbols were and in turn asked the person professing to be able to mind read what was on these cards. As well as later even a die rolling test was used to try and obtain the same effect and both methods proved fruitful. When scientists and psychologists could not prove a definite yes or no explanation after extensive trials extrasensory perception was accepted. But research did not stop there; the professionals went on to to investigating how the unconscious mind functions as well as evaluating the human personality so that they would come to some understanding of ESP.

It was later found that people who were aware of extrasensory perception on taking the card or dice test scored highly as opposed to those who were skeptical. And this was defined as follows – believers (sheep) and skeptics (goats) hence this is now known by professionals as the sheep-goat effect. Professionals then went even further and started including meditation, and the REM sleep procedures which later proved even more effective.

In the early 1960s, Rhine left Duke and founded the Institute for Parapsychology which later became the Foundation for Research on the Nature of Man.

Rhine, along with William McDougall, coined the term "parapsychology" (translating a German term introduced by Max Dessoir). It is sometimes said that Rhine almost single-handedly developed a methodology and concepts for parapsychology as a form of experimental psychology; however great his contributions, some earlier work along similar — analytical and statistical — lines had been undertaken sporadically in Europe, notably the experimental work of Sir Oliver Lodge.

Rhine founded the institutions necessary for parapsychology's continuing professionalism in the U.S. — including the establishment of the Journal of Parapsychology and the formation of the Parapsychological Association, and also the Foundation for Research on the Nature of Man (FRNM), a precursor to what is today known as the Rhine Research Center. His parapsychology research organization was originally affiliated with Duke University, but is now separate.

Parapsychologists have accepted extrasensory perceptions as normal and have also divided ESP phenomena into subcategories like clairvoyant, telekinesis, telepathy and many more.

I first became interested in ESP & Rhine in the early 60s at the height of the Cold War scare that the Russians were ahead of the US in all PSI [A term used to encompass all paranormal abilities. Includes both ESP and PK abilities] activities. ESP & PSI were all over the TV & pulp fiction of the day. I was already well versed in New Thought philosophy. It was an exciting time working with Telepathy, Psychometry, Clairvoyance, Precognition & RV.
